How FrankieOne are transforming the regtech landscape
FrankieOne is pioneering a transformative approach to regtech in customer onboarding and risk management.
In a recent interview, Aaron Chipper, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of FrankieOne, shed some light on FrankieOne’s evolution, the importance of big thinking, and the indispensable support offered by Stone & Chalk.
Turning frustration into innovation
FrankieOne emerged in response to the co-founders’ own difficult experiences with creating a bank.
“We originally decided to set up a bank, but realised the actual onboarding piece was incredibly difficult, having to connect up so many different systems” Aaron explains.
Sensing a gap in the market, the FrankieOne co-founders were able to build a solution that helps banks, crypto exchanges and other financial institutions create an easier and more secure onboarding experience for their customers.
“What we do is take information from as many sources as we possibly can in order to build up a picture of the customer.
We make sure they are who they say they are as well as do background checks for fraud, anti-money laundering and the like. What we do is to help keep the bad guys out essentially.
Our job is to make sure that the people coming in are real and, as I like to say, not a secret Russian oligarch or anything like that.”
Big thinking in action: solving real problems, big and small
With an appreciation for thought leaders like Luke Raven, Joe Weston, and Grant Kelly, Aaron views big thinking as a means to solve actual problems – big or small.
From a young age, Aaron has loved to find and solve problems.
“I’ve always been a problem solver since I was a child,” he says. “I love to pull things apart, see how they work, put them back together again, and fix them when they’re broken, whether that be with my hands or or my mind. I enjoy finding problems and building infrastructure around fixing those problems.”
The impact of community on innovation
With FrankieOne having been residents at Stone & Chalk Melbourne since it first opened its doors, Aaron outlines how impactful it is as a founder to surround yourself with a supportive community.
“Being part of an innovation community like Stone & Chalk not only serves to inspire, but it also introduces you to people who are going through the same things that you’re going through,” he explains.
“Building a business from scratch is genuinely hard. It takes a toll on you and on your family and friends, so it’s really helpful having people who understand that and who are going through the same sort of things to talk to, bounce ideas off of and seek inspiration from.”
On top of introductions to venture capitalists and access to different tech communities, the location and ease of Stone & Chalk are major draws for FrankieOne.
“We love the fact that it's in a great location. We like the ease of not having to think about an actual office for ourselves.”
